Hostel Analysis

The setting of the horror movie trailer is an abandoned warehouse which we don't know anything about. This is used to set the mood and this makes it mysterious and dark. The colour design of the trailer is mainly black and grey which is used to make us think it is dark and gloomy. The dark colour design sticks to the convention of horror movie trailers. There are no significant actors shown in the trailer as it helps to make the audience believe that the events actually happened. The props in the trailer gives us an insight to what is going on but does not give a lot away. This is used in movie trailers to make people see the movie which is conventional. The low key lighting is used to create a dark atmosphere. The lighting is conventional as horror movies are set in dark places. The masks and aprons are used to give us an insight which then makes the audience become curious as the trailer is teasing them so they go to see the movie. This is conventional in horror movie trailers. The motivated lighting helps the audience see ehat is going on. The water in the trailer creates a dingey, dirty and gloomy atmosphere which is usually used in horror movies and trailers as it connotes darkness.

The first shot is an establishing shot of the abandoned warehouse where the movie is set. This is used to tell the audience where it is. A series of close-up shots of water are used to create a dark and dirty atmosphere. This sticks to the conventions of horror movie trailers as they are typically in dark and mysterious environments. The close-up and high angle shots of the props gives the audiencean idea of what is going on. This teases the audience and makes them want to see the movie. The long shot of the man tied to a chair develops the idea of what happens in the movie which makes the audience feel like they have to see the movie. The close-ups makes us feel like we are part of the scene. This makes the audience feel uneased which sticks to the conventions of horror movie trailers. The panning and tilting shows us the setting of the movie and to let us know where this is happening. This sticks to the conventions of horror movies.

The montage of shots at the beginning shows the audience what is happening without giving much away. This is to make the audience curious and sticks to the conventions of horror movie trailers. At the start of the montage of shots, it is very slow to build up tension and suspense which sticks to the conventions of a horror movie trailer. The fade to blacks are used to keep us on edge wanting more and it also connotes death which most horror film trailers stick to. The flashes and strobe lighting is used as the shots get quicker and the music gets louder to build up suspense and excitement which is what a movie trailer is trying to do.

At the beginning of the trailer,the slow music at a low volume is used to set the atmosphere. The music is low to make the diegetic sounds of the weapons. This is used to create an impact which is used to make people see the movie. As the trailer progresses, the music gets louder which is used to build up tension. The sharp, metallic sounds and the crescendo is also used to create an impact so people will see the movie.
